Concept, illustration and copywriting for Sydney’s Macquarie University

Instead of a traditional flyer, Macquarie Uni offered future students a tongue-in-cheek toolbox with imagined futuristic tools that they could potentially be using in careers that don't exist yet. 

I was commissioned to create a suite of 5 nonsensical tools of the future, each in brand colours and relating to a faculty at the uni. I also developed the 'toolbox' artwork that would form the printed DM pages. The resulting illustrations were bright, comical and blended contemporary illustration with a Jetsons-style retro futurism. I also wrote a short description to go with each of the tools, mostly to amuse myself.

The illustrations were used in printed collateral including the DM and postcards, and were developed into a series of short animations for social and online content. They were also used to create renders and 3D printed sculptures which were displayed at the university's Open Day.

Illustration, identity development and collateral for Lucky’s, an American-style restaurant serving fried chicken, burgers, tacos and other equally nutritious meals, situated at Sydney Uni's Manning Bar.

The identity references the 50s/60s retro Southern American diners that inspired the food, but in a clean and contemporary way. I developed the accompanying illustrations, contemporising vintage mascots and cartoons that were such a fun and iconic part of that era in advertising.

I imagined myself walking around the ice cream town, going up the Neapolitan stairs to the...ice cream shop. Buying an....ice cream. Dropping it. Crying. Having a wise old man comfort me and remind me that the streets are made of ice cream. Me saying "That's ok, I don't even like ice cream". But I do. I take a bite out of the man assuming he too is made of ice cream. Mistaken, I spit out the old man chunk as he falls to the ground. I catch sprinkles of hope in his eyes as he smoothly descends into the melted ice cream pavement. "So long, Old Man Chocolate", I imagine myself saying, but don't. I slowly rise to my feet and turn, taking in the glorious splendour of my surroundings. The soft, glowing sunlight shines through a tear that I wipe away with a waffle....Where am I?

An upperclass oddity from a far away place, lost in the desert with all his colourful albeit irrelevant regalia, being pulled along in the sandstorm by his struggling ladybugs.

A commissioned piece for a map enthusiast. I really love ancient and medieval maps and how impossibly detailed and whimsical they were, often with huge sections of the world remaining mysteriously uncharted.

I did a lot of research, looking at what must have been hundreds of examples, all wildly different. I went to an exhibition of some of the world's greatest maps and was truly inspired there. What fascinated me most were the bizarre mythological creatures conveniently slotted into the unexplored waters, as well as the sometimes absurd surrounding detail and the "almost but not quite" shapes of the countries. They were generally pretty eccentric – much more interesting than our boring contemporary maps.

A homage to the moon, the night and dreaming. I imagined someone living under this huge semi-sentient moon structure whose job was to flick the switch (or pull the huge lever) and turn it on every night, allowing sleepers to dream. I was frequently reminded of a favourite book from when I was a kid, Hildilid's Night. It's illustrated entirely in black and white, except (spoiler ahead) for when the sun rises, and has this great crosshatching ink style depicting endless hills, huge clouds and bright light rays from the moon. I wanted to capture the feeling of that detail and strong light/contrast.
